Janet joined the team at East Side Elders (formerly Dayton’s Bluff Seniors) in mid-June 2015 and has had the opportunity to work on the transition from out-going ED, Rhonda Battisto. Janet comes to the organization with a rich background in non-profit management, most recently working with seniors and vulnerable adults at Tubman where she established and managed the Elder Care & Rights Center. Her areas of specific interest include elder abuse awareness and prevention, recognizing financial exploitation of the elderly, and the importance of support for the formal and informal caregiver.
She states that it is her passion for quality of care and quality of life for our elderly citizens that drives her to seek out the best resources and the best people to provide care and services. As an educator, Janet has trained first responders, law enforcement, social workers, healthcare professionals and advocates to recognize signs of abuse or neglect or self-neglect. Additionally, she supported programs that led to a better understanding of the issues facing those who have, or live with, Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. While at Tubman she introduced a program for advocates to understand and cope with the issues facing the elderly victim of domestic violence. As an advocate for caregivers in the community she approached corporations to address the stress and potential financial impact on employees who care for an elderly relative or loved one.
She earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of East Sussex in Advanced Dance and Education, and has taken several courses and programs to advance her knowledge of non-profit management. Her previous assignments have included leadership positions at the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, ElderCare Rights Alliance, Tubman, Minnesota Medical Association and Trumbull Loves Children. Her interests outside the office include music, dance and theater, gardening and cooking and is an avid Zumba participant. She lives with her husband, dog, and college-aged kids in Woodbury.
