Community Service Volunteer Policy

Because East Side Elders serves a vulnerable population including seniors and people with disabilities, we are unable to serve as a site for court-ordered community service volunteers.

Volunteer Driver

Description: With the help of volunteers, East Side Elders provides free rides for seniors to medical appointments, grocery stores, hair appointments, and other errands.  As our program expands to serve more and more seniors, we need to add to our team of volunteer drivers.  Mileage and parking fees can be reimbursed!  This volunteer position is also a great opportunity to make a friendly connection with seniors who may feel isolated from the community.    

About Us:  East Side Elders helps our seniors live full and rewarding lives — in the home and community they want — for as long as possible and as healthy and well as possible. Our teams of volunteers, students and community members provide a wide range of services and activities that give the necessary support and resources to our elderly neighbors wherever they call home.

Hours:  Flexible.  Our greatest need is for volunteers who can provide rides weekdays in the mornings and afternoons, but there are also opportunities to help on weekends.  

Qualifications:  

  • Must pass a background check
  • Able to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds in a caring, courteous manner
  • Must provide proof of a valid driver’s license and insurance
  • Volunteer drivers must have their own vehicle to use for providing rides

Monthly Blood Pressure Clinic Volunteer

Description: Help seniors monitor their blood pressure by volunteering at our monthly clinic!  The clinic is held on the third Monday of each month from 9:30am to 10:30am.  Volunteers must have experience taking blood pressure.

Tasks:

  • Greet clients when they arrive at the clinic
  • Take blood pressure as requested by clients
  • Keep track of clients who visit the clinic

 

About Us: Our mission is to create a circle of care around the elders in Dayton’s Bluff, Payne-Phalen, and Conway-Battle Creek neighborhoods, empowering seniors to live safe and independent lives in their homes.

Respite Volunteer - Training Provided

Description: Make a difference in the lives of seniors and their primary caregivers – volunteer today to provide respite care! Respite volunteers spend quality time with seniors, helping them enjoy their favorite activities, while their primary caregivers take time for themselves. An afternoon providing respite might include helping a senior complete a craft project, going for a walk, reading together, watching a movie, or other activities enjoyed by the senior.

Socialize with Seniors

Description:  Meet new people and help fight loneliness!  Volunteers are matched for one-to-one visits with seniors in the community.  This is an opportunity to help seniors stay in the homes and communities of their choice – and to make a connection with a new friend!  East Side Elders also supports caregivers in their journey to provide care for their loves ones.  Social volunteers can help caregivers receive a much-needed break.

Schedule:  This is a very flexible opportunity – volunteers usually visit with a client once per week for an hour or more.

Wellness Clinic Volunteer

Help keep seniors healthy at our Wellness Clinics!  RN/PHN needed!

Description:  Registered Nurses or Public Health Nurses – this is an opportunity to gain experience working with seniors in a clinic setting. 

About Us:  East Side Elders helps our seniors live full and rewarding lives — in the home and community they want — for as long as possible and as healthy and well as possible. Our teams of volunteers, students and community members provide a wide range of services and activities that give the necessary support and resources to our elderly neighbors wherever they call home.

Hours:  2 works per week – Thursday mornings or early afternoons.  Volunteers can also choose to help out on a more occasional or fill-in basis.  

Qualifications:  

  • Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or Public Health Nursing
  • Must pass a background check
  • Able to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds in a caring, courteous manner

Volunteer Housekeeper

Help seniors live independently in their homes!

Description:  Volunteer Housekeepers are needed to support seniors in the community.  As our elders age, it becomes more difficult to take on tasks such as vacuuming, mopping, and doing laundry – but you can help!  Duties vary by senior and may include light cleaning, laundry, and cleaning floors.  Volunteers are needed on an occasional and regular basis, depending on your schedule.

Bingo Volunteer

Description:  Help seniors enjoy a day of bingo!  Individual and group volunteers can help by calling bingo, helping with prize distribution, assisting seniors with marking numbers, and more.  Help is also needed with setup, serving lunch, and cleaning up after the event.  The event will be Monday, September 24th from 12pm to 1:30pm.

Elder Cafe Volunteer

About Us:  East Side Elders helps our seniors live full and rewarding lives — in the home and community they want — for as long as possible and as healthy and well as possible. Our teams of volunteers, students and community members provide a wide range of services and activities that give the necessary support and resources to our elderly neighbors wherever they call home.

Description:  Volunteers are needed to help make our monthly Elder Cafe events a success!  Elder Cafe is an opportunity for seniors in the community to socialize and share a meal while enjoying entertainment.  We are looking for friendly volunteers to help serve food, visit with seniors, and help with outreach.  This is also a great opportunity for groups to volunteer together!         

Date:  Elder Cafe is held on the second Thursday of each month from 12 to 2 p.m..  We are looking for volunteers who want to help each month and volunteers who are looking for a one-time volunteer opportunity.  Groups are welcome to volunteer together!

Group Opportunity: Fun and Games with Seniors

Make a connection with seniors in the community!

Description:  This is a volunteer opportunity for groups to make a positive impact on the lives of seniors in the community.  Groups of ten or more will play cards, board games, bingo, and/or lead other activities for seniors in Dayton’s Bluff or Payne-Phalen – our two service areas.  This is a great opportunity for classes, student groups, groups of friends, and more to volunteer together and have fun while also giving back to the community.  

About Us: East Side Elders is a community program dedicated to supporting seniors in our community to allow them to remain in their own homes.  Our mission is to build a circle of care around the elders in Dayton’s Bluff and Payne-Phalen to empower seniors to live safe and independent in their own homes and to prevent falls and support the persons caring for the seniors.

Group Volunteering: Create Cards for Seniors

Description:  Gather a group of friends, family, or coworkers to create cards that will brighten a senior’s day!  Handmade greeting cards will be included in our monthly Brown Bag groceries – free food that is delivered to seniors by volunteers.  This is a family friendly opportunity and will be a lot of fun for kids and adults alike.

Rake Leaves for Seniors – Help with Spring Cleanup

Description: This is an opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of seniors in the community. Sign up to rake leaves for seniors – this can also be a great group volunteering project!  Tasks include raking leaves and gathering them into bags.  Taking the leaves to the compost site is not a requirement, but is appreciated when possible.
